Can a Startup Launcher Launch Itself?

LaunchRock.com

If you read TechCrunch or Hacker News, then you’ve read about a couple of brand new startups employing a basic viral loop to grow their user base at an extraordinary pace, even before they launch. It all started with Forkly’s “viral invite system”:

How does it work? It’s actually fairly simple: after you sign up, we provide a custom, unique short URL that we encourage you to share out via email, social networks, etc. When somebody visits that URL and signs up, we can track it back to you and give you credit for it. After 3 people sign up with your link, you make our “priority access list” and we let you know via email.

Hipster then employed the same technique to great success with over 10,000 people signing up in the first two days.

When we saw this we knew that we could use it on a number of different projects. We knew plenty of friends who could use it too and so, last night, LaunchRock was born last night at the first Philly Startup Weekend. We worked through the night to build LaunchRock to launch itself this morning in just a half a day. Can a startup launch itself? It sure can. And you can too. Seriously, how meta is that?

If you’ve got a startup, a blog or really any website that you’re working on and you still haven’t put up a “launching soon” page, sign up so that you can start collecting users and encourage them to share your site. The sooner you sign up and get at least three friends to sign up, the sooner you’ll be able to use LaunchRock for yourself.

Having done a few startups, I’ve seen the need for this for quite some time. In fact, we just built this exact functionality for Checkmint on Wednesday. Can’t wait to see it in action!

  2. Jameson Detweiler says:

Thanks Jake. We’ve got a lot of cool ideas to expand on the concept too. Can’t wait to see you put it into action on http://checkmint.com/

V cool. Can we help you help everyone help everyone?!Would it be possible to work with you to make a re skinnedversion of existing software so we can help the public to solveother social issues (Ideally using the http://www.TRAIDmark.org businessstructure)? Maybe working with someone likehttp://www.ONEworldHEALTH.org or http://www.earth.org whichis closing so maybe this is something I could help you take on soeveryone can share local knowledge? Also can http://www.WEBiversity.orgshare video’s and create http://www.TRUSTlibrary.org with yourteam? http://www.WhymanDesign.com

  6. Jameson Detweiler says:

Hey Whymandesign, we’ll have a widget that you can embed on your site. I think that might fit your needs very well.

  7. David Mulder says:

Really looking forward to this actually, though I was wondering about how the API is currently looking or whether it only allows you to export a list of mails, oh well, might consider using it depending on the options of the API.

  8. Jameson Detweiler says:

David, can you clarify your question?

  9. teaguehopkins says:

Excellent. Was just looking at implementing this for myself. Hopefully this will save me the trouble.

  10. Jerry Thompson says:

Still unclear how I will be able to get access to try this service out for my own project considering I’m not driving a large number of people to visit the link. At what point do I get access? Hopefully being vague is not a key factor in getting people to share/join.

  11. Chris Robinson says:

Jameson,Just wondering what your roll-out schedule for invites is going to be for those trying to get in.

  12. Jameson Detweiler says:

Chris and Jerry, get your referrals up! We’re rolling out from the top down.

  13. motivation says:

Nice, I guess it is going to be a big hit.

  14. Bruce Sturgell says:

I really like the idea, and I’ve signed up and started spreading the word. After I get 3 people to sign up for the service, what happens? Do I get some sort of notification or invitation from there?

  15. Ryan says:

This is the perfect solution for my start-up. I’ll be keenly interested in checking it out when it’s available. Is there an ETA for delivery?

  16. Mike Ferguson says:

Jameson – Let me in!!! hahah. Wow – talk about a better mousetrap – love it! Need…..this……now……

  17. raymond_wu says:

Has anyone considered using @getlaunchrock for post-launch “re-launch” to get more users? Click here to get yours http://launchrock.com/6ku9c

  18. Tresendas says:

Totally cool concept and the timing is perfect for us. I signed up (I think) but the link I got to share with my friends was http://launchrock.com/ which can’t be right – t’aint no way for your system to know people are coming in through my account.

  19. Jameson Detweiler says:

@tresendas You’re right, we can’t track that. It’s a bug that should be patched any minute now.

  20. Tresendas says:

ok… so just to be clear: I’ve got to get three people to sign up via my link in order to get on the waiting list to use launchrock, right? Or am I missing something? (don’t be confused by the name change… I just set up my posterous account. Allen Price and Tresendas are the same)

  21. Jameson Detweiler says:

@Allen, that’s correct for the time being. Three referrals won’t get you in instantly though. We’re working down our list, starting with the highest referrals.By the way, has the link been fixed for you?

  22. Tresendas says:

Nope, still no link. And if I need three referrals just to get on the list I’d like to sort this out asap. Should we take this conv. off line? I just followed you on twitter…

  23. byagi says:

Uh oh – if you guys are working from referrals down, it’s going to be a looong time before you get to me. With my luck, it’ll be right about the time my site launches.

  24. Graham Cox says:

Two things, will we be able to control the number of invitees the subscriber needs to get (ie does it have to be 3).I just signed up btw and got your email but there was no text in the body, just a headline. Is that right? Thanks Graham

  25. Graham Cox says:

One other Q, is launchrock designed to work with launches that are imminent (eg in the next week or so) or can it be used successfully with launches that are say 2-3 months away? Our launch is scheduled for early May.Thanks

  26. PHLSW says:

New startup weekend team MealTik just launched using LaunchRock. see the slick landing page http://mealtik.com

  27. Jerry Thompson says:

If I had an account, would I need to point my domain name to a LR IP or do I self-host the app? In both cases, does LunchRock have access to my signup data in any way for its own use or is strictly my data? Unless its been voiced, its one thing to grow your signup base for a pending launch of a startup, its another if the app your using is building up their own database with YOUR data as well.

  28. Jameson Detweiler says:

Sorry for the delay guys. Been hard at work to try and get more people onto LaunchRock.@Graham – The copy will be fully editable so you can change it to say what you like. We don’t automatically send emails when people hit a threshold. (At least not yet.)As for when to use it, that’s up to you, but I think engaging potential users early is a good idea. You want confirmation of your idea. You also want beta testers, and you want feedback. Put up a blog to show your progress. Show screenshots. This creates an audience early on to help you evolve your product. At least, that’s how it’s working for us. We’re already making lots of changes/additions based on feedback.@Jerry – Currently, you have to point your A record to our IP. This is also how Posterous and Tumblr do it. We’re looking at a couple of ways to make this easier though, and we will also probably create a widget that you could embed on your own site.As for your concerns about abusing user data, don’t worry, we won’t. That is your list, and you own that list. Not us.

  30. Kurt Kinetic Road Machine says:

Is this viral loop based around folks who might click an email, Facebook, or Twitter account that would be related to a specific niche or more of an all encompassing viral loop?

  31. chasedave says:

Is there a charge for this? I’m considering this for my startup and also curious about the business model.

  32. Benjamin Reece says:

Guys, trying to get http://kin.io onto launchrock – our staging server for our new launch page is: http://thedeltree.com/kinio – is it possible to integrate your server backend with our form?

  33. Graham Cox says:

Does launchrock integrate with 3rd party autoresponders such as aweber, mailchimp etc, so that the sign ups go straight into our autoresponder. Or do we have to import them manually?ThanksGraham

  34. Checkmint says:

Jameson, http://checkmint.com is all set for you to /check/ out now. We’ve been in development mode for our “Simplified server monitoring” product for the past few months and would love feedback on the upcoming UI changes and feature enhancements. Also – Looks like the LaunchRock /launch/ has been a pretty decent success. Congrats, man.

  35. NoSQL boy says:

LoLI think I like the generated coming soon pages of the Random Startup Generator better! :P http://www.ykombinator.com/16457/GoPing

  36. Jameson Detweiler says:

@Benjamin Not yet. We’re planning on making this possible in the future.@Graham We give you a list that is easily importable into any of those services, and we are working on an integration with them, but it is not available yet.

  37. rafael says:

I have 3 signups in my link referral! What do I do next?

  38. Jameson Detweiler says:

    @rafael You watch your inbox…

  39. Mayank Jaitly says:

Hi Jameson, I have six sign ups but didn’t received any email from the site. Is there any thing which I have to do ?waiting for your reply.Regards

  40. Jameson Detweiler says:

Hi Mayank, just be patient a little while longer.

  41. Joseph Doughty says:

Jameson,I wanted to thank you for this launch website site. FWIW: I think you have an excellent niche service that allows people like myself, who are not tech savvy to test out different launch ideas in my own niche industry.Good luck and I look forward to my account being approved.Waiting patiently.

  42. pete says:

Just wondering if you’re going to roll out other viral invite methods eg. a system like gmail rollout where members must be invited by other members and receive a limited number of invites to send out. We’re working on the basis of ‘exclusive’ feel for our site because it fits with our product. Thanks. Can’t wait till I get access to this! Cheers Pete

  43. george says:

Integration with Kissmetrics would be awesome… allowing pivots before you even launch!

  44. Aukzar says:

I like the concept but in the landing page there is not enough information for a member to know what are the salient features of the site. I have my own landing page at http://www.aukzar.com. Is there anyway I can get a invite but link the launchrock to my site.

  45. Jameson Detweiler says:

@Pete, yep. That will likely come at some point.@George, great idea@aukzar, yes, you could set it up at a subdomain and add a link to the LaunchRock page.

  46. Jerry Thompson says:

How long is the wait to get access? Waiting 3 weeks now seems to be a bit long.

  47. Jameson Detweiler says:

@jerry, We’re letting people in based on referrals. Email me though Jameson [at] launchrock [dot] com, and I’ll give you an invite.

  48. Avi Shenkar says:

    @Avi Awesome! Thanks.

  51. Devin G Rhode says:

my team could REALLY REALLY use this!

  52. Marc Ricker says:

We have had a launch rock site up for just about a week now and absolutely love it! We are about to do our first real push to the site to start getting people to sign up, but even without any promotion, we have already had over 1500 page views and over 200 people register. Basically, that is organic traffic. With the share functionality built into the page, we have seen our product on Twitter and Facebook and can’t wait to see what happens next week when we really push it! The LaunchRock landing page also works great for Facebook. We built a Facebook page and integrated our launchrock page there. (Check it out at http://www.facebook.com/timebombdeals ) This helps us keep a more cohesive list and make it super easy for people to share our page. Be sure to sign up on our site, http://www.timebombdeals.com We are giving away an iPhone every week until our launch on April 1 and then will be giving out a bunch of iPads, iPhones, and Time Bomb Gear!

  53. Jean Andre Vallery says:

Since reading all of your posted ideas and statements about transferring the A record for the domain I believe that this service might benefit me. However I believe that by having a referral method is good.without transfer. My website doesn’t sell a service. Its a way of life for thousands of travelers. These travelers are out of the norm type. They are commonly called hitch hikers, vagabonds, drifters. This is a way of life that is worldwide. My website is up. Getting noticed is another thing. Hitch hikers, vagabonds or drifters work and live off the grid. They travel and take advice from others of their same kind. I have enough experience doing this myself. When your off the grid you are invisible to the public. But not to your own kind. I would like the referral method except I won’t move my domain.Thank youJean Andre Vallery (google the name you will see)

  54. Vladimir says:

Hey, I have got already 12 sign ups with my link from launchrock, but still haven’t received login and password for starting page creating. How long shall I wait?

  55. Jameson Detweiler says:

@Jean There is a widget coming out. More details are coming soon.@Vladimir Odd, please email me at jameson@launchrock.com, and I’ll make sure you get activated.

  56. Jean Andre Vallery says:

@Jameson, I need a clear explanation, please. How does this get spread through out the net? By capturing emails for me to subscribe them to my mailchip? Or, does this become a twitter key word that followers get a credit towards some prize that I offer? Really how will this spread like wildfire towards my website? 1million hits? is this possible with your method?

  57. jean andre vallery says:

@Jameson Could you contact me soon? I will be hitting the road hitch hiking soon and will not be online as much. I would like to get a launch page.

  58. Sara Holly says:

Am launching a non-profit tech startup…curious how many invites it takes to get a beta invite? ;-)

  78. Chad Kaul says:
  79. Annoyed says:

Got an invite to this from a so-called friend whom I now see was just using me to get access to your product, assuming there even is a product. Pretty annoying that I can’t just see the product, API, or anything else. Maybe I’ll look into it further once you’re done with the email harvesting if I ever get another email about it. Actually, now that I think about it, I see little evidence as to whether this is actually more than just an email harvester.

  80. jeremy campbell says:

Thanks again to launchrock from Team 2Board! We started our alpha sign up this week and everything is working great so far. Hang in there all you folks waiting on an invite, it took us some time too but it was absolutely worth it. Check out 2Board.com to see launchrock in action – we are using it to run an iPad 2 giveaway based on the most referral sign ups before 4/22.-J

  84. llorberb says:

I think this is a great idea. For people that are just starting out this will save time and create best practices for launch pages. I just did a launch page for savvyvolunteer.com. I am not as happy with it as I would like. Please send a beta invite!

  85. Ariel Resnik says:

Great concept !! Love it.. Am launching a start up in the coming months and would love to pre-launch it using Launchrock. I have asked a number of people to sign in using my URL. Is it possible to get BETA invite?? Cheers

But there is nowhere for them to click to sign up?I am rather baffled, am I missing something? Please help, this idea rocks!

  89. Anita Malik says:

would love to use this for a startup I have coming in mid-April. What is the word on the invite waiting list?

  90. Jameson Detweiler says:

Hey everyone, it’s becoming very hard for us to monitor comments here, so requests made here likely won’t be seen. If you have questions, please email us or go to http://support.launchrock.com.

  91. Kevin Wilkey says:

I noticed a client of mine is using your service for their “Coming Soon” page which lead to me to look at your site. I am in the investment banking business and work with companies to help them raise capital. I have two reasons for contacting you.First, I would be interested to know if your company has any plans to bring in outisde investors and if so i would be interested to discuss helping you with that process.Secondly, I work with start-up companies and projects and would be interested in using your service for all our projects/clients. One of my clients is producing several new reality-tv projects and I would love to use your service for all their websites.Let me know if you would like to discuss further.

  92. Salah-Eddine Benzakour says:

Hello,Great idea, bravo.I saw this technique first as a solution here ViralListMachine.netBut yours is more elegant! The right mix between about.me and VLM.It will be great if you can integrate some autoresponder services like aWeber and MailChimp. Thanks,Salah

  93. Jeremy Campbell says:

Hang in there if you haven’t gotten your invite yet…it’s worth it.www.2board.com has been using launchrock for 1 week now and we couldn’t be happier with our choice. So how many signups does it takes nowadays to get access? We’re fellow startup weekenders and we need this yesterday :)

  112. Nick Parsons says:

this is great, seriously. would be nice if there was a way to change the site name though. i can change the logo, but the site name remains unchangeable throughout. need to edit some formatting to be consistent with branding.

Cool idea and love it that a fellow Philly team is doing something getting national attention. Best, Kevin

  114. Tim Unruh says:

I have read all the media press on launchrock and love the concept. My question is… I have created a launch site, but how do I now generate traffic? I am looking for ideas!.

  117. Steven Forbes says:

Hey – I’m hoping to launch my own startup later this year – and I need something like this right now! hope I get an invite soon :) This looks like a really good solution to a lot of people’s problems. Keep up the brilliant work!

  118. Tim Unruh says:

We have pre-launched on Launchrock! What an awesome concept!

  119. Thomas Knoll says:

    Tim – Awesome!

  120. Keith says:

What has this world come to? This is retarded.

  121. ryan says:

When can I start using this? I signed up 6 weeks ago?!

  122. Keith says:

@ryan, I think you have to sign up to a different service that lets you make pre-launch emails. You’ll get that launch email and then you can sign up for the real launch email. Don’t launch your site yet. Just keep building buzz about it. Actually don’t ever launch it. Just make pages about the launch.

  123. abbyyy says:

nice when it will available to use

  124. Ryan says:

My bad: I don't need help with the pre-launch emails.  I need help getting the Launch Rock code/service for my own new launch.  How do get the "invite" they talk about?

  125. printo.jp says:

wish there had been a launch service like this earlier when we launched http://www.printo.jp

  126. Max says:

wanted to use it for my new startup … it will be great to have an invite ! Cheers guyz you rock !

  129. Terry says:

Can we upload our own front design with LaunchRock?

  130. A guy who WAS interested in point.ly says:

Point.ly seems pointless to me, if you don’t know my city, but will grant access if I go viral. That’s just STUPID.

  131. Joss Mackison says:
  132. andrewrogoff says:

I wish you were around when we built our teaser site for Resource Guru but we did it all manually instead – http://resourceguruapp.com. We added an iPad prize draw as a little extra incentive.

  133. Thomas Knoll says:

Terry – I assume by ‘front design’ you mean the box the form is in. Because, with the standard (hosted) LaunchRock page, you can upload images for the background and a logo for the signup box. But, if you want to create and host a page yourself, you can use either our widget/embed code or the API to fully customize the experience.

Love this – can’t wait to get my invite so I can review it and start telling my clients about this. Looks like an incredibly powerful tool.

  140. empowered_nut says:

AWESOME! I have used a convoluted manual and semi automated version of my own, this is a MUCH NEEDED tool for internet marketing. I have a few launches schedule for this year and want to be certain to implement this. Have you solved the API for Aweber and iContact yet? This would be the king of king tools if you have (importing into Aweber is a real pain). Hope to launch with this launch tool, thanks @LaunchRock

  141. Greg says:

How long will it take to get an invite to this thing? I’ve produced 427 clicks and 8 sign-ups and still not a word from Launchrock. Can you tell us how many it takes?

  142. Robert says:

Same here – 9 sign-ups, but no invite..

  143. Keith says:

    Sounds like a pyramid scheme

  144. Thomas Knoll says:

empowered_nut: we do not have direct integration with 3rd party email. But, if you want to drop a message at http://bit.ly/pingLR I would love to see if there is a way we can help you out.Greg and Robert: You should automatically receive login information after your third signup. Some people’s invites got caught in a spam filter somewhere along the way, so drop me a message at http://bit.ly/pingLR so I can get your accounts sorted out.Keith: when abused it could be. But we’re trying to build tools that incent sharing with the people who might be most interested.

  145. John Huffman IV says:

I would love to use launch rock for a rap competition website we are launching with Snoop Dogg, Andre 3000, Erykah Badu, Ice Cube and Chuck D. Can you please have someone from your company contact me to discuss?

  146. Technucall says:

Hello Launchrock, not sure if this is the right place to say this but can you make your blog theme available for the public on posterous, i would like to use it for my own blog please.

  147. Nicole says:

When will you be launching? I saw that visualize.me already has access? possible for someone to get in touch with me? I’d really like to use it for the start-up i’m working on

  148. Thomas Knoll says:

John Huffman IV – How would we get in touch with you? Can you say hello at http://bit.ly/pingLR

  149. Dana says:

Hello! I am trying to use your great service, and I have set up my launch rock page, but when i go into Netfirms, I am a little confused about what I am doing. First I changed the A record and I think I did that properly, but then am I supposed to go to “pointers” and set the URL to “www.launchrock.com”? or was I not supposed to do that part? Thanks a lot!Dana Masters

  150. Jahn Bek says:

What a great concept. We are in process of building a new startup and would love to utilize this feature.

  151. Thomas Knoll says:

Jahn – Glad you are excited! We’re busy getting the platform ready for you. Or get three others to sign up to get into the beta.

  152. Jahn Bek says:

Thomas – thats glad to hear. I have 2 more to go :)

  153. Matt says:

love the idea! I remember seeing somewhere on the blog that showed a sample of metrics that launchrock keeps about people who have signed up. That is, name, email addy, and # of referrals. where can I see this example? thanks!! can’t wait to use Launchrock

  154. MT says:

we’re about ready to launch our launchrock page but I want to include a link to our terms and conditions (our referral program includes $ giveaway). But any link I try to include to a different HTML page in our public_html directory takes the user directly back to the launch page. Please advise! thanks

  155. Grow Taller says:

    Nice… I have 3 more to go :) :) :)

  156. Jackson says:

Hit me up @jsratx – many questions about your service, launching something this fall, thanks in advance.

  157. Multi-Level Marketer says:

OOH I LOVE PYRAMID SCHEMES!!!! This is one of the best I have seen yet.

  158. Jaya says:

I got the launch page going. However, when I am doing early test, I am having difficulty understanding how I can receive my customer registration emails. This is soooo crucial as I intend to reach them when my product Beta starts. Can you pls advise where I can see this info ( I have also included Google Analytics… but does not show any site stats for some reason.

  159. Suzie says:

Jameson, I am having a bit of a hard time getting my pre launch site to look the way I want. I’d like my sign up bar to be to the right like fetchnotes, if possible? Also, I have left several emails with help@ and as of yet have heard nothing back. I am waiting to launch, but can’t until I have the answer as to where and how one accesses the email addresses collected. Thank you in advance.

  160. Keith says:

Suzie, how about just launching your actual product?

  161. Suzie says:

Hey Keith, My website wont be ready till the 12th, so thought this was a cool idea in the interim that’s all. Especially since after a test link via my referral I got a lot of hits in a short space of time, coupled with reading the success of others.Your thoughts….

  162. Keith says:

Suzie,I just don’t understand why this service even exists. Whatever your product is, it’s probably going to be more useful than this. For people that just want email addresses before a launch there are plenty of email list applications out there that would let you collect user emails. Unless you’re Google I don’t understand why people get so excited about these web apps with vague descriptions of being “The Next New Thing”.

  163. Suzie says:

Keith, is this your product?I think it’s exciting, because it has the viral capacity which I haven’t seen associated with Aweber for example. It looks like you can see which emails are associated with which referrers and it’s also interesting to see who has referred who. I also think the fact that it’s already connected to facebook / twitter and generates a code and message with the referral link is also pretty neat. I’ve seen it go viral in my network pretty quickly, so would like to see whether the same is true for when I use it as a prelaunch to my forthcoming site.

  164. The World's Biggest Cynic says:

Isn’t this just a massive email list-building scheme that can be sold, whilst making it very hard to blame anyone for it? Kind of like a P2P torrent of shared email information?

  165. Keith says:

Suzie, pretty much what “The World’s Biggest Cynic” said.

  166. Mike G says:

We are experimenting with LaunchRock for a social multi-platform we are launching. Why do we think LR is cool? Well for us we want a group of testers who really want to get early access, get involved and help make a better game. So for us this is a great way of weeding out the average semi-interested user and someone who is really excited out it. I will check back in after a few weeks and let you know how we went.Cheers, Mike Gardiner – Lime RocketTwitter: @LimeRocketApps

  167. Pedro Alejandro Wunderlich says:

I’m almost done with my iPhone app with my co-founder and we’d love to build a coming soon page with you guys! We’re innovating an very, very old category: alarm clocks.I’ll give you guys an early beta in exchange for an invite to build my coming soon page. Serious.Awesomeness!@pddro

  168. Mike says:

I don’t get it… so i share the link and im added to a priority access list? what does that do for me and my start up.. im totally lost

First of all I am super pumped for the team of LaunchRock and am dying with curiosity of what new changes will take place. There are some real competitors out there but I know they will come out the gate of 500 Startups swinging. Anyway, competition is healthy and a needed life preserver. So please don’t let me down and just come up with a new pricing model and that’s it :) lol. Thanks guys for helping me launch StartupDelight.com, which is now being acquired and I am now working on my new blog that features many LaunchRock users http://99Launch.es. LaunchRock team, don’t be strangers, holler atcha boi :-)

  171. Christian says:

Hey, Thanks for your service! We will test it as soon as you let us in.
