Questions

Hello. I want to start a company that writes and produces films that are profitable in the marketplace for me and my partners. How do I do this?

I have a shoe string budget

Well , first , you have to know exactly what you want to produce , and why . Then, you have to think about the brand of market that is viable at the moment , and/or the consumers you want to attract/market to . You have to brainstorm , figure in the cost of production & distribution + profit.

This won't happen overnight . Its going to take a lot of research , observation , planning and funding , of course .

But those are keynote factors you need to significantly consider , if you want to at least get your business headed in a successful direction . ✨

Hello, and great question. I feel the most important question you need to ask is "why". Why do we want to make films, and then, what stories do we want to tell? These two questions are critical, because before a film can be made, and then, potentially, become profitable, the foundation must be strong.

I have been working in the film and television industry for over 25 years, and I can tell you from experience that the projects that had the most heart, the most compelling story were the ones that meant the most, and, quite often, made not only financial gains, but had social impact.

Making sure you understand the technical aspects of the business, writing a proper script, etc, is critical. Have you taken courses in filmmaking? You could also look to crowdfund a short film based on your script to generate publicity and attention. The big thing is to start taking action: from writing scripts to finding ways to produce shorts, trailers, etc.

I hope this helps as a start

You should probably start with one film at a time and raise the financing using a site like indiegogo, keep your budget small, and your story highly original. You need to study the global marketplace for film acquisitions to see who is buying films and who the top sales agents are for a film like yours based on genre. Also, submitting a film to as many film festivals as you can afford is also a must, including the 50-100 film festivals that do not have an entree fee.
